State Employee Household Goods Moves – California DGS Approved Carrier

State of California Employee Household Goods Relocation Moves

CG Moving Company provides residential moving services for eligible State of California employees relocating under the official Department of General Services (DGS) Transportation Management Unit (TMU) program.

If your relocation is connected to a promotion, transfer, or assignment change and your move is being paid or reimbursed by the State, your move may follow the State’s Household Goods Moving Guide and authorization process.

We are experienced in supporting state-authorized residential moves and helping employees navigate the required documentation, timelines, and moving standards.

Who This Program Applies To

This relocation program is intended for:

  • Current permanent State of California employees

  • Employees relocating due to assignment change, promotion, or approved relocation

  • Moves where the agency has authorized relocation expenses in writing

Your agency determines eligibility and provides the required relocation authorization.

How the State Employee Moving Process Works

1. Agency Authorization

Your appointing authority provides written relocation approval and issues a Moving Service Authorization, commonly known as STD 255.

2. Choose an Eligible Carrier

You select a moving company from the State’s List of Eligible Household Goods Carriers.

CG Moving Company is an approved carrier available to support these moves.

3. Home Survey and Estimate

A visual survey is performed and you receive a written estimate outlining services such as packing, unpacking, and storage-in-transit if authorized.

4. Move Execution

The move is completed according to the terms of the state authorization and transportation agreement.

5. Billing and Audit

The carrier bills the State directly for authorized charges, and DGS Transportation Management audits the invoice.

Standard Allowances and Important Limits

The Household Goods Moving Guide describes common limits that may apply unless your agency approves exceptions:

  • Household goods authorization up to 11,000 pounds

  • Storage-in-transit generally up to 60 days

  • Additional approvals required for excess weight or extended storage

  • Employees may be responsible for charges outside approved limits, including certain special services or split deliveries.

Storage in Transit

If delivery cannot be made immediately, the State may cover storage-in-transit within authorized limits.

Key points:

  • Storage beyond authorized periods may become employee-paid

  • Storage over 90 days may convert to permanent storage with different pricing

  • State insurance coverage generally applies only during authorized periods

Insurance and Valuation Overview

When your move is performed under an approved state authorization:

  • Carrier liability is typically set at $0.60 per pound per article

  • State-arranged insurance provides additional protection up to $2.00 per pound of total shipment weight (depreciated value limits apply)

For loss or damage, claims are first filed with the household goods carrier.

Am I required to use a State-approved carrier?

For state-paid or reimbursed moves, the guide recommends using a carrier from the State’s List of Eligible Carriers.

Can I move myself and still be reimbursed?

Self-move options exist but are limited in reimbursement scope and are not covered by State insurance.

What happens if my shipment exceeds the approved weight?

Additional approvals may be required, and expenses beyond authorized limits may become the employee’s responsibility.

What documentation should I keep?

Retain copies of estimates, inventories, delivery paperwork, and authorization forms for audit and claims purposes
